1994 Vodafone Mobile  / Cell Phone Design

Designed by Paul Cohen in collaboration with Graeme MacDonald for Saatchi and Saatchi in Sydney.

Made initially for a series of television and print advertisements to promote the Vodafone mobile phone network.

Vodafone did not actually manufacture mobile phones at the time and some confusion ensued with customers wanting the phone they had seen in the ads.

The materials and colours in the design were influenced by the Porsche Boxster concept car which had just been shown.

The 4 way menu button was an original concept yet to be seen in production phones but very common soon after. The curved LCD was impractical at the time and remains so.

The first model was made at 150% scale so that the detail would photograph well but subsequently a number of 1:1 models were made for photography in context. At the time virtual modeling was not a viable option.

The model base is solid acrylic with a heat formed lens, acrylic paint and dry-transfer lettering. Model maker - Owen Lawrence.
